Resistance butt welding andflash butt weldingThe main workpieces that need to be quenched are steel, aluminum alloys and copper alloys. The main function of quenching is to increase the rigidity, hardness, wear resistance, corrosion resistance, fatigue strength and toughness of the metal.
Quenching is a heat treatment process that heats metal to above the critical temperature, keeps it warm for a certain period of time, and then rapidly cools it in quenching media such as water, oil, other inorganic salts, and organic aqueous solutions to obtain an unbalanced structure.
There are many quenching methods, and there are four common ones, namely double-medium quenching, graded quenching, isothermal quenching, and single-medium quenching.
1. Dual-medium quenching: The workpiece heated to the quenching temperature is first cooled to about 300°C in a quenching medium with strong cooling capacity, such as water, and then transferred to a quenching medium with weak cooling capacity, such as oil, to cool to room temperature, so as to achieve different quenching cooling temperature ranges and have a more ideal quenching cooling rate. Used for parts with complex shapes or high carbon steel, alloy steel, etc.
2. Graded quenching: A quenching process in which the workpiece heated to the quenching temperature is quenched in a low-temperature salt bath or alkali bath for an appropriate time. After the inner and outer layers of the workpiece have reached the medium temperature, the workpiece is taken out for air cooling. It can greatly reduce quenching stress and prevent deformation and cracking.
3. Single-medium quenching: Quench the workpiece that has been heated to the quenching temperature into a quenching medium (water, oil, air) to completely cool it. This is the simplest quenching method and is often used for carbon steel and alloy steel workpieces with simple shapes.

Wire rods include low carbon steel wire rods, medium and high carbon steel wire rods. It is an economical and efficient steel material with high tensile strength and yield strength, good plasticity, and low relaxation performance. It is mainly used as a blank for wire drawing and is also widely used in the construction of cement products, bridges, nuclear power plants, high-rise long-span buildings, highways, etc. If butt joints are required, high-quality joints must be obtained. For low- and medium-carbon steels, we generally use resistance butt welding machines, while for high-carbon steels, we use flash butt welders.
Welding points:
1) Aluminum, chromium, silicon, molybdenum and other elements in steel are prone to generate high melting point oxides. We need to use high current for a short time and speed up the upsetting speed in order to quickly squeeze out or flash off the oxides.
2) As the content of alloy elements increases, the high-temperature strength becomes stronger, and we need to increase the upsetting force.
3) For pearlitic steel, the alloy elements increase and it is easy to quench. We must take measures to prevent quenching embrittlement.
The welding characteristics of low alloy steel are similar to those of medium carbon steel and are easy to harden. We also need post-weld heat treatment. This type of steel has strong strength at high temperatures and contains many oxides. It requires larger upsetting force and faster flash and upsetting speeds.
In addition to the characteristics of high carbon steel, high carbon alloy steel also contains a certain amount of alloying elements. Due to the high carbon content, wide crystallization temperature range, and long semi-melted zone at the interface, if the upsetting force is insufficient and the amount of plastic deformation is insufficient, the oxides will easily remain in the semi-melted zone and form a loose structure, thus failing the test.
