1. Flash retention amount
Flash butt welding machineThe flash allowance in is the burning allowance: it refers to the length of the workpiece consumed due to the "flash" of metal during the flash process.
When selecting the flash allowance, it should be such that there is a molten metal layer on the entire end face of the workpiece at the end of the flash, and the plastic deformation temperature is reached at a certain depth. If the allowance is too short, the above requirements cannot be met and the welding quality will be affected. Leaving it too long will waste metal materials and reduce productivity. When selecting the length, you should also consider whether there is preheating, because the length of preheated flash butt welding can be 30% to 50% smaller than that of continuous flash butt welding. For example: for steel bars, the allowance for continuous flashing is equal to the part severely crushed by the cutting machine blade when the steel bar is cut off, plus 8mm. During preheating flash welding, the allowance should not be less than 10mm.
2. Upsetting allowance.
Pre-forging allowance: refers to the length of the workpiece consumed due to metal extrusion from the joint after the workpiece is upturned and pressed at the end of the flashing process.
It affects the removal of liquid metal and the size of plastic deformation. If the length is too short, liquid metal will remain in the joint, which can easily form defects such as looseness, shrinkage holes, and cracks; if the length is too long, the impact toughness of the joint will be reduced due to severe bending of the crystal grains. The length is selected according to the cross-sectional area of the workpiece, and increases as the cross-sectional area increases.
During upsetting, in order to prevent the interface from oxidation, the current is not cut off immediately before the end interface is closed, so the upsetting allowance should include two parts - the upsetting allowance with electric current and the upsetting allowance without current. The former is 0.5~1 times that of the latter. For example, for steel bars, the upsetting allowance should be 4-10mm, which increases with the increase in diameter and grade of steel bars (the electric upsetting allowance accounts for about 1/3).
